[00:38] – Ple–Honey, where are you going?
[00:40] – Home.

[01:50] – What’s in the box? – All part of the plan.
[01:53] – What plan? – A really good plan.
[01:55] – What? – A crafty one.
[01:57] Probably the best plan I’ve ever come up with.
[02:00] Hi. There we go.
[02:01] Very good. Don’t eat any.
[02:03] [chuckles] Bye.
[02:05] – I can’t get it out of my head–
[02:07] “He was supposed to fuck me.”
[02:09] I mean, it’s histrionic. It’s borderline delusional.
[02:12] – Oh, no, none of that. – What?
[02:13] – None of that psychobabble. Today you are a fun mom.
[02:17] You put on a bright smile,
[02:18] push that pain down nice and deep,
[02:20] and pretend to be pleasant.
[02:21] Don’t even mention his name.
[02:23] – She needs to talk about it. – Oh, she will.
[02:26] Trust me, these things don’t go away.
[02:27] Hey…
[02:28] – Huh?
[02:30] – We got this.
[02:31] Me and you…
[02:33] in the zone.
[02:36] That’s right.
[02:43] [doorbell rings]
[02:46] Remember, big smile.
[02:50] – Hi, Laura. – Hi, Valerie.
[02:53] – Happy Thanksgiving.
[02:57] – Oh, you remember Mae-Yi, right?
[03:00] – Valerie, it’s nice to meet you.
[03:03] – What is– Uh…
[03:06] – Oh, you know what? That’s my fault.
[03:08] I totally thought I texted you.
[03:13] – [sighs]
[03:15] – Mae-fucking-Yi? – Deep breaths. We’re okay.
[03:18] – I don’t think I’m okay.
[03:19] I feel like my hands are numb. – We’re okay.
[03:21] – I don’t know how I’m gonna– – You’re just gonna…
[03:24] – I don’t even–What does– what does that mean?
[03:26] – Focus. Head in the game.
[03:29] Mae-Yi?
[03:31] How about a tour of the house?
[03:34] – Oh, I don’t really– – Sure you do.
[03:36] Yeah, let’s go this way first. – Okay.
[03:39] – Watch the wine.
[03:41] Be careful you don’t trip.
[03:44] – [clears throat] I’ve missed you.
[03:46] – Hey, you want to see my room?
[03:51] – And here’s the lovely backyard.
[03:56] So then I had this little place off Abbot Kinney.
[03:59] Thought I’d do the whole surf-bum thing,
[04:01] but it turns out I don’t like surfers or bums.
[04:03] – Uh-huh.
[04:05] – You ever spend any time around those people?
[04:07] – Bums?
[04:08] – Westsiders. – Oh. Uh…
[04:11] No, not really.
[04:12] – Don’t. 405 to the ocean’s a dead zone.
[04:15] – I like Santa Monica. – You’ll grow out of that.
[04:19] [cell phone chimes] Oh.
[04:26] So what do you think of the foliage?
[04:29] I think it’s mostly conifers.
[04:30] Those are, you know, the ones–
[04:33] ones with the cones.
[04:34] – You don’t have to just keep me busy.
[04:36] You know that, right? – What? Mae-Yi, we’re bonding.
[04:39] Excuse me.
[04:44] – She’s really angry. – Val, she’s a teenager.
[04:47] She’s an anger factory. All she’s saying is, “Love me”.
[04:50] – Those aren’t the words I’m hearing.
[04:51] – Just go talk to her.
[04:54] [cell phone ringing]
[04:56] Hello, hello.
[04:57] – Very shrewd.
[04:59] – What? – Your little care package.
[05:02] – Oh, you mean the cake pops?
[05:04] – Did you do that to piss Jake off?
[05:05] – Jake doesn’t like cake pops?
[05:07] – No. He doesn’t like reminders of you
[05:08] showing up at our door.
[05:10] You know he has rules about the holidays.
[05:11] – For such a free spirit, he’s awfully traditional.
[05:14] – [scoffs] You knew exactly what you were doing.
[05:16] – I have no idea what you’re talking about.
[05:19] But now that I got you, what are you doing for dinner?
[05:23] – Actually, this is one of my favorites,
[05:24] just ’cause of the shadow.
[05:26] It just took, like, hours to get to that point.
[05:29] – You’d have to figure that’s exactly twice as long.
[05:33] – Yeah. – Uh, um, hey.
[05:35] So, I-I think we can all agree
[05:37] it’s time for Laura to get back to living
[05:39] in a stable environment, huh?
[05:41] – Oh, definitely. Uh, let me just get it straight.
[05:44] First, it was the waffle guy, and then there was the waiter–
[05:47] nicely done, by the way– and then the dick pic?
[05:51] – Okay, so you were talking about my sex life?
[05:54] – I’ve been trying to, but it’s quite the saga.
[05:56] – Oh, saga? Sorry, what are you getting at?
[06:00] – You’re the one talking about a stable environment.
[06:02] Mae-Yi and I are trying to make a home together.
[06:05] – You can’t make a home in my house.
[06:09] [doorbell rings] – I’ll get it.
[06:10] – Actually, I think we need to finish talking about this.
[06:17] – It’s fine. We both needed the chance to explore.
[06:20] – Uh, wait. You cheated. I’m dating.
[06:23] – Fucking is fucking. – No, it isn’t.
[06:26] – Grandma, hi. Where’s your boyfriend?
[06:28] – He’s parking the car. [gasps]
[06:29] – Valerie, Drew. [chuckles]
[06:34] – What is happening?
[06:38] – [whispering] “Boyfriend”?
[06:41] – No, no, no.
[06:45] Why?
[06:53] Oh, Mom, Mom. Be careful.
[06:57] – Oh… Honey, I am so sorry.
[07:01] That looked like such a lovely casserole.
[07:03] But I brought your favorite–
[07:06] mashed potatoes.
[07:08] Oh. I can take care of this.
[07:13] – Did you know she was coming?
[07:15] – No. – So you invited her?
[07:18] Trying to punish everyone? [door opens]
[07:22] – Hello, hello. [door closes]
[07:28] – Oh. [chuckles]
[07:30] That’s no boyfriend.
[07:33] That’s your grandfather.
[07:37] – My God… [chuckles]
[07:39] Look at you.
[07:41] Have you–
[07:43] [inhales deeply] My lovely children.
[07:46] You know, there’s no joy that’s greater in a man’s life
[07:50] than when his family comes together in celebration.
[07:57] I already know what I’m thankful for.
[08:05] – [scoffs]
[08:15] – When’s the last time you saw him?
[08:17] – I don’t know– ten years.
[08:19] – Boyfriend?
[08:20] – I didn’t even know they were talking.
[08:22] – It’s an act, right? I mean, it has to be.
[08:24] Do you think he’s dying?
[08:26] – Looks okay to me.
[08:27] – Yeah, but you can’t tell from the outside.
[08:29] For all we know, there could be some horrible disease
[08:31] that’s just ravaging his organs.
[08:32] – One can only hope.
[08:34] – Hepatitis. – Dementia maybe?
[08:37] – [whispering] Shit. Incoming.
[08:38] – What? – Incoming.
[08:40] – So…
[08:42] this is where you’ve been hiding?
[08:44] – Yeah, you found me…
[08:47] in my house.
[08:49] [indistinct chatter, laughter]
[09:04] – So, uh, Nicaragua?
[09:06] – Arcata.
[09:08] Running a sort of an eco-lodge there.
[09:10] Sustainable permaculture, you know?
[09:12] The natives really embraced it.
[09:16] Your mother told me about what happened–
[09:19] how your depression got the best of you.
[09:23] I’m sorry I wasn’t here in your moment of need.
[09:27] – You could have called, Dad.
[09:30] – We were living off the grid.
[09:32] Phones just weren’t part of the equation.
[09:36] – Well… doing fine now.
[09:39] – Well, there you go. You see, that’s it.
[09:41] That’s it. That’s the spirit.
[09:46] – Yeah, one of those. Unh.
[09:49] Ooh! It’s hot.
[10:02] – She cooks?
[10:06] – It’s takeout.
[10:08] She refused to show up empty-handed.
[10:13] You realize this is hard for her too, right?
[10:16] – Look, I just want to get Laura back to her normal routine.
[10:20] – I don’t know what normal is,
[10:21] and we agreed that she could stay where she wants.
[10:23] – She doesn’t know what she wants.
[10:25] – Are you sure?
[10:30] You know, maybe she stays with me and Mae-Yi,
[10:32] and then for a while, you can focus on yourself.
[10:35] Maybe that’s for the best.
[10:39] [door opens] – [clears throat]
[10:44] I need this drink so bad.
[10:46] Holy fuck.
[10:48] He’s stronger than ever.
[10:49] I think he’s been feeding on livestock.
[10:51] – This is all your fault.
[10:52] – My fault? – Yes!
[10:54] Now I look like I’m the irresponsible one, not Drew.
[10:57] He thinks I’m this… thing.
[10:59] – Val, that’s ridiculous.
[11:01] – I am not ridiculous.
[11:03] – Okay. – Look at her–
[11:05] mocking me with her noodles.
[11:08] Will you talk to her?
[11:10] – Laura? – Yeah. She loves you.
[11:13] – She does, doesn’t she?
[11:15] [cell phone chimes]
[11:17] Oh, fuck. – What?
[11:20] – You remember Sarah Finn? – Uh, from college?
[11:23] – Yeah, she met Mom and Dad,
[11:25] had a nervous breakdown, had to be institutionalized.
[11:26] – She had schizophrenia. – Yeah, that they triggered.
[11:28] – Well, it doesn’t work like that.
[11:29] [doorbell rings]
[11:30] – Tell her that. Oh, wait, you can’t.
[11:32] She only listens to radio signals in her teeth.
[11:33] – Wait, what? Wait, wait, wait.
[11:35] More guests? – Yes. An opportunity arose.
[11:37] – Whose team are they on? – Val, the “Titanic” is sinking.
[11:39] It’s every man for himself.
[11:41] – What about the plank? – The plank?
[11:43] – The plank. Jack puts Rose on the plank.
[11:44] I saw that movie five times. – Oh, at the end?
[11:46] There’s only room for one fucking person on that plank.
[11:48] Move! – Ow!
[11:49] – Oh. – Oh. Good to see you too.
[11:53] – Oh, hi. You must be Emmy.
[11:56] – Valerie? Thank you so much for having me.
[12:00] – Well, who have we here?
[12:02] – Uh, this is Alex’s girlfriend.
[12:06] – Huh.
[12:08] You know, the last girlfriend we met was, uh–
[12:10] – Sarah Finn.
[12:12] – And she was a lovely girl–Sarah.
[12:14] Whatever happened to her?
[12:16] – She died. Come on.
[12:29] – My parents are crazy too. Everybody’s parents are crazy.
[12:32] It happens when they hit 65.
[12:35] – Is that right, or are they always crazy,
[12:37] and it just takes us 30 years to notice?
[12:39] – [chuckles]
[12:41] – I’m thankful you’re here. – I know you are.
[12:55] – Also…
[12:58] I’m thankful for these.
[13:02] Oh, and this. – [laughs]
[13:06] – But most of all, I’m thankful for…
[13:08] Oh, yeah, and this. – [chuckles]
[13:13] – Okay.
[13:14] [sighs] Dad.
[13:17] – You know, I really have to say, old boy,
[13:18] you’ve done well for yourself.
[13:20] I mean, this house, business,
[13:23] girlfriend.
[13:24] Truly, it’s everything we wanted–
[13:26] – Dad. What do you want?
[13:29] Oh, uh, sorry about that. Turkey’s ready.
[13:33] Well, see you downstairs. – Yes.
[13:36] [door closes]
[13:39] – He touched my goddamn turkey.
[13:45] You carved it?
[13:47] – It still cooks when it’s out.
[13:50] – There’s 23 minutes left.
[13:51] – You and your computers.
[13:52] Listen, sometimes you just– you go by feel.
[13:54] – It’s a clock!
[13:56] – Honey, it’s Alex’s house.
[13:58] Maybe you should just let him handle the turkey.
[14:00] – You’re right, sweetheart.
[14:01] Listen, uh, I’m sorry.
[14:03] All right, everybody, let’s eat!
[14:15] – Not bad. Not bad at all.
[14:18] – Thank you, Drew. It was a team effort.
[14:22] – Isn’t this nice?
[14:25] – Reminds me of the old days.
[14:27] We use to do Thanksgiving in a different country every year.
[14:32] – I seem to have forgotten that part of our childhood.
[14:34] Val? – No.
[14:36] – We stopped when your sister was born.
[14:38] Traveling with children is such an inconvenience.
[14:41] [both laugh]
[14:44] – Isn’t it just? So, Mom…
[14:48] Dad, it was a surprise to see you guys arrive together.
[14:53] – Was it?
[14:54] – Life is full of wonderful surprises.
[14:58] – Okay, “surprised” is the wrong word.
[14:59] Maybe “shock”?
[15:00] – It was confusing. – Yeah.
[15:04] – We’re your parents. Where else would we be?
[15:07] – Historically, about a million other places.
[15:10] – We tried to expose you to various cultures
[15:12] to show that there’s more than one way to live your life.
[15:14] – Oh. – Though I must say,
[15:16] I’m rather tickled to be at such a traditional Thanksgiving
[15:18] with a turkey and the stuffing and potatoes.
[15:21] – [laughs] Alex’s potatoes.
[15:23] – Go get ’em. – Oh.
[15:28] Emmy? – Hmm?
[15:29] – How are the potatoes? – Mmm. Excellent.
[15:32] – They’re an old family recipe.
[15:34] Darling, try to share. – Thank you.
[15:38] – The neighborhood kids called him Fat Alex until he was 13.
[15:41] – [laughs]
[15:43] – Okay, Mother. – Fat Alex?
[15:45] – They were incredible imaginative.
[15:47] – One summer, Valerie went away to camp,
[15:49] and all Alex ate were mashed potatoes.
[15:52] Every day, mashed potatoes.
[15:54] By the time we picked her up, she didn’t even recognize him.
[15:58] – You remember, right, dear? – Vaguely.
[16:01] He was always in the grip of some obsession or another.
[16:04] – Could you pass me that wine, please, Mae-Yi?
[16:06] – Although… [clears throat, chuckles]
[16:08] I must say, I have a very clear,
[16:11] specific memory of Alex’s bottle.
[16:14] – Oh, yes, that was a bizarre phase.
[16:18] – Can we please talk about something else?
[16:19] – When Alex was a kid,
[16:21] he used to take these empty soda bottles,
[16:24] and he’d put them all around his room,
[16:26] and then during the night, instead of taking
[16:28] the ten steps or so that he’d have to go to the bathroom,
[16:30] he’d pee into these soda bottles.
[16:32] And then in the morning, he’d sneak into the bathroom,
[16:35] he’d empty them, and then he’d put the bottles
[16:36] back where they were.
[16:38] Now, this went on month after month after month.
[16:40] And, finally, one day I asked him what it was about.
[16:43] And you know what he did?
[16:45] He broke out into these outrageous tears,
[16:48] and he said, “These are my night bottles.
[16:51] My night bottles.”
[16:52] I don’t know what this was about.
[16:54] It was like the neurons in his brain got tangled up
[16:57] or something and never quite went back right.
[16:58] We believed for a while he was gonna need a full-time nurse.
[17:01] [laughing]
[17:13] – Oh, so, Laura dear, how are things at school?
[17:17] – I don’t know.
[17:18] It’s been a few weeks since I’ve gone.
[17:22] – What was that?
[17:23] – It just seems like such a poisonous environment.
[17:27] – Why didn’t I know about this?
[17:29] – Let’s discuss it after dinner.
[17:32] – What happened at school?
[17:34] – My mom got a little too involved
[17:36] in extracurricular activities.
[17:38] – What the heck does that mean?
[17:40] – She fucked my photography teacher.
[17:43] – Ah.
[17:45] – Why are you even here?
[17:48] – [scoffs] Are–are you all right?
[17:52] – Can’t we just enjoy each other’s company?
[17:55] – No.
[17:56] No, we can’t.
[17:59] I mean, Thanksgiving is supposed to be about what–family?
[18:01] And I just don’t know who half you people are.
[18:09] Why are you here?
[18:12] – We were going to wait until the end of the night, but…
[18:17] this Christmas marks the 45th anniversary
[18:20] of when Charles and I met.
[18:22] – Oh, so you’re going to count the years that you were apart.
[18:25] – Or the evenings…
[18:27] fucking other people?
[18:30] – Many of those years we spent apart, yes.
[18:33] And some more recently alone,
[18:35] but a piece of us has always remained together.
[18:39] It took us a little while, but we finally had a breakthrough.
[18:43] – You’re getting euthanized.
[18:44] – I’ve asked Charles to marry me.
[18:47] – And I’ve agreed. – [scoffs]
[18:51] When I looked straight into your mother’s eyes,
[18:53] there was no denying the feelings.
[18:56] I knew then and there
[18:57] that I wanted to be with her forever.
[19:01] – So what’s that– five years maybe,
[19:03] ten if you’re lucky?
[19:04] Five.
[19:06] – We’re having a ceremony in about a month–
[19:08] just a little thing, just friends and family.
[19:11] We’re hoping you all might attend.
[19:13] – [laughing]
[19:32] [continues laughing]
[19:44] It’s too late.
[19:47] Look around. The damage is already done.
[20:18] – Bravo.
[20:19] – Stop.
[20:21] – Mae-Yi and my parents–
[20:23] that’s cold, even by my standards.
[20:24] – She betrayed me.
[20:26] – No, she didn’t.
